Tinnitus (Ringing in the Ears)

The word tinnitus comes from the Latin tinnire, meaning "to ring." Tinnitus is a condition in which people hear sounds such as ringing, whistling, or buzzing in their ears in the absence of an external source of sound.

When tinnitus begins, the cause is not always in the hearing organs. The ringing can signal problems with the auditory nerve, blood vessels, cervical vertebrae, or jaw joints. However, you should first see an otolaryngologist with such complaints, and only after consulting with them should you visit a neurologist or other specialized specialist.

Constant tinnitus: causes and provoking factors

It is not easy to answer the question of why tinnitus occurs. In each person, it is caused by individual reasons. It is often accompanied by an external or internal factor. In the first case, the symptom manifests itself against the background of prolonged exposure to noise or loud sounds. For example, when a person who has worked a shift in a workshop still hears the noise of production units on the way home. The external factor occurs with a sulfur plug or a foreign body in the ear.

When a person experiences constant tinnitus, the causes can be varied:

  • External ear diseases - otitis, otomycosis, and other infectious lesions. They are often caused by staphylococcal or fungal infections. They provoke pulsating tinnitus and in advanced stages can lead to hearing loss. To avoid complications, drug treatment is used, after which hearing is checked.

  • Middle ear damage - loud sounds injure the eardrum, as a result of which the picture of perception of acoustic signals is distorted, and extraneous noises occur.

  • Inner ear diseases - congenital anomalies of development, as well as acquired benign and malignant tumors. They are eliminated surgically.

  • Earwax plugs are the most harmless reason for occasional tinnitus. Earwax accumulated in the ear canals and dead epithelium, together with external impurities, can seriously block the canals. And along with hearing loss, they cause tinnitus. But the problem is easily solved by flushing.

  • Pathologies of the auditory nerve can be congenital or acquired, provoke an inflammatory process, which causes a strong ringing.

  • Otosclerosis - often causes pulsating or monotonous noises.

  • Osteochondrosis - due to the displacement of the vertebral discs, the vessels are compressed, and the blood flow is disturbed.

  • Cerebral circulation disorders - are often expressed in noise interference in the ears.

  • A side effect of some medications - usually, this nuance is indicated in the instructions. If such symptoms are found while taking medications, it is worth consulting a doctor.

Diagnostics

To diagnose the presence of noise, specialists conduct a series of objective studies. An otorhinolaryngological examination and a study of the patient's general condition are mandatory.

Laboratory tests allow you to exclude infectious and inflammatory diseases, to identify the patient's allergic and hormonal background.

CT and MRI allow you to exclude tumors, examine the vessels of the head and neck.

How to reduce the effects of tinnitus?

  • Try to control your blood pressure, measure it regularly;
  • Try to eat less salt, because its use is one of the causes of circulatory disorders;
  • Avoid sources of loud noise and use earplugs for protection in your professional activities;
  • Learn to relax, arrange relaxation minutes for yourself;
  • Refrain from smoking, coffee, cola, tea;
  • Exercise regularly, exercise improves blood circulation, which helps to reduce tinnitus.

How to get rid of ear noise?

Since ear noise is just one of the symptoms of a disease, it is not the noise itself that is treated, but its cause.

Only after the cause of the ear noise is found, appropriate treatment is prescribed, which may include both conservative measures and surgical treatment depending on the nature of the disease. The main thing is to find and eliminate the cause.
