The birth of a child is a joyful event in the family. However, already in the first months of life, an infant may experience significant disorders that can affect the further growth and development of the child. One of them is rickets.
Rickets (from Greek - spine) is a disease of infants and young children, characterized by a violation of phosphorus-calcium metabolism, which leads to abnormal formation of the skeleton and dysfunction of internal organs and systems.
The cause of rickets is a lack of vitamin D in the baby's body. Therefore, the expectant mother needs to start preventing rickets even during pregnancy: walk in the fresh air, eat right, take multivitamins. Other risk factors for the development of rickets are prematurity, large body weight of the newborn, or heredity.
Affecting the nervous system, rickets can manifest itself in infants as early as 2-3 months of age. Its first signs are:
- sleep disturbance;
- irritability, tearfulness;
- frequent shudders;
- poor appetite;
- large size of the crown;
- excessive sweating;
- baldness of the neck.
If rickets is not detected in time, some disorders in the structure of bones and changes in internal organs may be irreversible, and the child will remain disabled for life. The consequences of the advanced form of the disease can be:
- delayed psychosomatic development of the child;
- muscle weakness and excessive joint mobility;
- late teething;
- weak immunity;
- violations of the functions of internal organs (liver, lungs, heart, gastrointestinal tract).
Although rickets is a dangerous disease, you should not make such a diagnosis yourself. Anna Nikolaevna Buzoverya, a pediatric orthopedist and traumatologist at ORC “Marusich”, has been diagnosing and treating rickets for more than one year.
For the treatment of rickets, vitamin D drops, calcium and phosphorus preparations can be prescribed. It is also recommended to properly organize the daily routine, walk in the fresh air and provide high-quality and timely complementary foods.
