Osteoarthritis is considered a disease of the elderly, but it can also occur in children. Arthrosis is a destructive-dystrophic disease that affects any joints, more often the knee and hip. Pathology affects not only the articular cartilage, but also the underlying bones, the synovial (articular) membrane, ligaments, capsules, muscles. This disease is characterized by a long course with exacerbation and progression. Failure to seek medical attention in a timely manner can lead to disability.
The causes of arthrosis can be:
- joint injury;
- microtraumatization due to physical activity;
- circulatory disorders in the limb;
- joint inflammation (arthritis);
- hereditary decrease in cartilage resistance to normal stress, genetic predisposition to the disease;
- metabolic disorders as a result of endocrine disruptions, for example, diabetes mellitus.
Symptoms of arthrosis:
- intense cutting pain in the area of the affected joint, appearing during movement and disappearing after rest;
- stiffness of movements after a long stay in one position, for example, after sleep;
- crepitus (the sound resembles the crunch of snow underfoot in frosty weather);
- swelling around the joints;
- muscle atrophy of the affected limbs;
- curvature of the axis of the limb in the form of valgus or varus deformity.
Osteoarthritis in children should be distinguished from other diseases with similar symptoms. Therefore, it is important to seek qualified help from a pediatric orthopedic surgeon.
